Pflegefreistellung (Nursing Leave)

Who
You have a right to Pflegefreistellung – also called "Pflegeurlaub" – if you are charged with necessary care for a close relative with whom you share a household.

When
As soon as you enter employement, you have a right to nursing leave. Per working year, you have a right to one week of nursing leave.
You can also call upon nursing leave by the hour.
You will have a right to a second week of nursing leave within one working year in case you are again prevented from working because of the necessary care for a sick under-twelve-year-old child (also adopted or foster child) living in a shared household with you. The right exists only if your child gets sick again, not for an illness of two consecutive weeks.

How much
During the nursing leave, you will continue to draw your salary as while you are working.
If the right to nursing leave is exhausted, and if there is no right to a continued salary for other important reasons, you can take a holiday for necessary care for an under-twelve-year-old child (or adopted or foster child) without prior agreement with your employer. 

What & where
There is no fixed form for the application for nursing leave, it can be done in writing or orally, with a doctor’s certificate or none.
If the employer asks for a doctor’s certificate, s/he has to bear the cost.
